How Not Eating a Marshmallow Can Help Your Legendary Items

The Marshmallow Strategy for Traceries and Reforging (LOTRO Legendary Items Guide)

Hey Free Peeps!

I have seen lots of questions about traceries and reforging, so this is a post where I am going to attempt to simplify the strategy for your Legendary Items progression in Lord of the Rings Online with one soft and mushy idea: The Marshmallow Strategy. It will help you make better decisions about when to open tracery boxes and when to reforge.

There’s a famous psychological study called the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment. In it, a preschooler is presented with a marshmallow and told that they can eat the marshmallow, but if they wait a while, they can have two marshmallows.

Tracery boxes are the same way!

If you open it too early, you are settling for a lesser reward.

This is because the traceries scale based on your level when you open the box.

So, if you are like me and follow your dopamine-driven instincts to open all your tracery boxes right away, you are getting weaker traceries that need replacing more quickly. If you wait, you get stronger traceries that can last longer.

This care for the Traceries as a resource may not be as important to someone who is playing a single character. However, if you have alts that you also want to level up AND use your resources efficiently and powerfully, this can be key to having enough to go around to upgrade what you want.

Here’s a chart I made after wasting all my traceries by level 100. XD

Marshmallow Strategy Table

Whenever you are about to open a tracery box, stop, and ask yourself, “Do I need this now, or will it be better if I wait?”

Notes:

  • You can save your old traceries with a tracery reclamation scroll and share them with the other characters on your account.
  • As of update 46 (December 2025), “Enhancement Rune and Tracery packages [boxes] that grant items scaled to your character level are now stamped with a Max Contents Level matching the world level cap when the package is acquired. Previously acquired packages will be stamped with Max Contents Level 160.”
  • This post concerns Reward Track (Shift + I) tracery boxes. There are also selectable tracery rewards from quests and deeds; these don’t scale.
  • If you find you are doing no damage, by all means, open some boxes and sort that out! This will really depend on your playstyle and what you are trying to accomplish in game.

The Marshmallow Strategy for Reforging

When you reforge your Legendary Items, they will increase the item level to match the character level. As you level up, certain transitions on the tracery side of things may indicate when it would be best to reforge. It is nice to be able to reforge and open traceries at the same level. Also, reforging costs gold, and while it starts at a few hundred silver, it ramps up with each level. Depending on your relationship with LOTRO currency, you may want to reforge strategically to save your gold for gear.

Treat reforging like opening tracery boxes, wait for meaningful moments, not every opportunity.

I’ve highlighted on the Marshmallow Strategy Table which levels, or ranges of levels, I think I would reforge at if I could do it all over again. I’ll note that at 91-95, I would only reforge the Class Item.

Even if you don’t adhere to this chart, which might be an overcorrection on my part, remember to ask before reforging or opening traceries: Do I need to do this now?

Marshmallows are great! But wait for the right moment. If you do, your Legendary Items will hit harder, last longer, and cost less.

Thanks to the LOTRO Wiki, /lotro reddit, and my kin for chiming in on this topic.
