Legendary Server Uncertainty Update

We have an update from Orion! It occurred on the Angmar channel of the LOTRO Official Discord. I know a lot of Forum users and other players don’t regularly read every channel of the Discord, so here’s a recap of the conversation so you can interpret it yourself.

This time, Enz brought up the Legendary Servers and their planned lifespan.

Enz – 6/29/2026 5:02 AM

@Cordovan I think it’s time to talk about the fate of Mordor/Angmar again as we are approaching Q3-Q4 when we were told a decision would be communicated. With 105, server population and activity has felt markedly better – 4-5 kins running the Throne raid, PUG groups and a more active economy. I think we can agree that this is simply because there’s good, end-game content to work towards and do. The level caps following 105 should be the same – Abyss raid at 115, Anvil at 120, and probably the best set of raids in the game at 130. I think we’ve made it overwhelmingly clear that an early/accelerated closure of the servers is absolutely not what anyone wants. Therefore I wanted to take this opportunity to cite the healthy activity levels of Mordor (can’t speak for Angmar as I don’t play there), which is not going away, and any early closure would be extremely disappointing.

Orion is the Lead Systems Designer for LOTRO. He responded about 30 minutes later:

ssg_orion [LOTR] – 6/29/2026 5:34 AM

We’ll be providing details in the near future. There are some details in the upcoming LttP [Letter to the Players] of what the summer and late summer will bring for Angmar/Mordor.

ssg_orion [LOTR] – 6/30/2026 11:01 AM

The letter will likely not be available today. We are hoping to have it out this week

Gazo posted a question and this helpful graphic for reference.

Gazo — Yesterday at 3:10 PM

Am i seeing this right? Update 50 July 31st and 115 seems to be before that? (Gazo helpfully posted the image of the Development Update. Here is the full letter they posted July 1: https://www.lotro.com/news/lotro-letter-to-players-q3-2026-en)

I think a lot of us were expecting more information in the LttP. Are you able to tell us when we can expect details on the future of the legendary servers?

Orion responded to this:

ssg_orion [LOTR], Yesterday at 5:42 PM

We are not ready to discuss those dates. When we get closer to the timeframe we will let you know.

Enz inquired:

Enz — Yesterday at 10:35 PM

Genuine question: what’s required for you to be “ready”? Why are the decisions made with such little notice?

Here’s the answer that gave us some new information! Get ready or you will miss it:

ssg_orion [LOTR], 9:31 AM

Current plans have the servers running into the first quarter of next year. The exact date is still yet to be determined. Barring any physical hardware issue, this is not likely to change.

Hellrider observed:

Hellrider – 9:58 AM

now it is even more funny they werent “ready” to tell us anything, but after 1 day bang! They are ready

ssg_orion [LOTR], Role icon, LOTRO Team — 10:38 AM

We would rather not deal in vagaries, like a quater one timeline, but you are eager to know. We feel it was important to answer this to ensure that you understand we hear you.

My interpretation of this, which might be on the cynical side, is that Angmar will end sometime in January – March of 2027. At that point, I think we will possibly be given a choice to go to Mordor and continue the Legendary Server experience (which is fab, you should try it) and/or transfer characters to Live servers.

Time to schedule everything I still want to accomplish on the Legendary Server with my kinship. I don’t want to be a doomsayer, but the end is nigh, or that is how I am reading this.

What are your thoughts?

I would LOVE to know.
